Getting Ready Wedding Photos Tips and Tricks

Getting ready wedding photos is one of my favorite topics. The thing that is often forgotten about the ‘getting ready’ part of the day is how chaotic it can be. How cramming 8 bridesmaids, the make-up/hair artist and the photographers into a single room filled with make-up, curling irons, duffel bags, garbage and water bottles can start to feel over crowded and look very cluttered. THIS GOES FOR THE GROOM TOO! The goal of timeless getting ready images is space & light. Here’s some tips!

Getting ready location:

Don’t procrastinate. Consider both you and your partners’ getting ready space early on instead of leaving it until the last minute. It’s easy to put the guys in some dark dingy basement or a messy man-cave. But they deserve a beautiful, spacious spot too!

Look for spaces with a lot of natural light & space. VRBO/Airbnb tend to have more beautiful spaces rather than a hotel. Make sure there is lots of natural window light in the room where you’ll both be getting ready. Open up all the blinds and curtains, as photographers usually shoot with the lights off. This makes a WORLD of difference in your images- I promise!

If using a hotel , ask them if you can get hair/makeup ready in a conference room instead & use your hotel room for photos. OR ask friends if their hotel room can be cleaned & used as a clutter-free zone.

If using your venue , have a corner (opposite of the window) in the suite where all personal belongings can go.

If using your home , don’t worry. Just make sure the home is tidy, organized & open all the window curtains. Have a designated room free of clutter to use for photos.

Prepare the getting ready room for both of you:

As much as you can, please keep both your getting ready room area free of trash, bags, snacks, etc. Especially near the windows, as that’s the area that us photographers take our clients to take pictures. A great idea is to have one dedicated area or corner for food/snacks/drinks/bags/purses etc AWAY from the windows and from where everyone will be getting ready. Trust me, no one wants wrappers, water bottles and half eaten food in the background of the photos.

Think about what you will wear before you put on the dress :

There will be quite a few photographs before you put on your wedding dress, so maybe you want to put a little bit of thought into what to wear beforehand. A morning gown or a cute PJ set will be beautiful in the getting ready photos.

Getting ready details:

You may be wondering about the details that will get photographed like your dress, shoes, wedding invitations, etc. I’ve complied a list of things you can have ready for your photographer. You can view that list here .

Ties & bowties. If no one knows how to tie these… please get clip ons! It will save us all tons of time. Not to mention if no one knows how to tie them correctly, they will look wonky in the photos.

Iron out your wedding attire and accessories :

If anything is super wrinkly, iron/steam it the day before. Things like your dress, bridal PJs, robes, the suit, ties/bowties, pocket squares, etc. Things like that will show up in the getting ready photos and not easy to edit out.

Pop some bubbly!

Have champagne or shots, let’s have some fun! This creates a fun time where you can get loose and celebrate. It’s always a great photo op!

NY Weddings Events Reopening Guidelines Explained

New York, Let The Celebrations Commence!

It's official! Wedding venues, catering halls and other scheduled formal events will be allowed to resume on March 15th in the state of New York! See below for these updated guidelines released today by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

As of 3/15 venues will be able to operate at up to 50% capacity , with a maximum of 150 people allowed at one event. Guests will be permitted to dance , but only with members of their immediate household or the people they seated at their table. The venue must designate dancing zones for each table, and make sure each zone is at least six feet apart.

Responsible Parties are prohibited from holding in-person and catered events between 12:00AM (midnight) and 5:00AM local time until further notice. Live music, DJs and other forms of entertainment are permitted as long as the performers are 12 feet away from guests or showcase an appropriate physical barrier .

The venue owners or operators will be responsible for the following with appropriate vendors and clients such as brides and grooms:

Meeting capacity restrictions.

Notifying county health departments about in-person and catered events with more than 50 people.

Collecting information for contact tracing by requiring people to sign in before or upon arrival at the venue.

Requiring all attendees to have proof of a negative COVID test within three days of the event.

Implementing mandatory health screening for employees.

Enforcing social distancing during events.

Ensuring people are wearing masks or face coverings unless presenting at an event or sitting to eat or drink.

Designating points of entry and exits, as well as one-way paths on floors and stairs to prevent crowding.

NY Weddings & Events Up To 150 People

ALBANY – New York City restaurants can resume indoor dining Feb. 14 while wedding receptions of up to 150 people will be allowed statewide the next month, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo announced Friday he will allow New York City bars and restaurants to reopen their dining rooms at 25% capacity, reversing a citywide ban on indoor service that he put in place Dec. 11 as the state's COVID-19 rates were on the rise.

The Democratic governor also announced a plan Friday to allow wedding receptions beginning March 15 provided they follow certain rules and restrictions, limiting them to no more than 150 guests and requiring everyone attending to be tested for the virus before the event.

Cuomo's decisions Friday came amid a week where he's dropped certain coronavirus restrictions with the state's infection rate on the decline. On Wednesday, he rescinded more than two dozen "orange" and "yellow" zone orders, which had applied stricter rules to areas that were once struggling with coronavirus clusters.

Cuomo's decision on wedding receptions will except them from the state's current limit on gatherings, which is set at 50 people for non-residential events. Events will be subject to considerable rules and restrictions, including a mandate that all patrons must be tested for COVID-19 prior to attending.

Cuomo said the wedding events will be restricted to 50% of the venue's capacity, with no more than 150 people allowed to attend. The local health department will have to approve of any receptions before they're allowed to take place, and the state is developing an mobile app that will help with tracking test results.

Further guidance is expected from the state prior to the new rule taking effect March 15. And eventually, the state intends to expand the plan to include events other than receptions.

30 Wedding-Worthy Face Masks For Brides, Grooms & Guests

Raise your hand if you’re ready to move on from your disposable paper face masks and onto something cute?

Now raise your other hand if your dog-walking, grocery-shopping & gas-station-pumping face mask is NOT going to work for your wedding day (or your BFF’s wedding day)?

Mmkay, I see you all, window shopper Claire is here to help.

I hit that point about three weeks ago whilst working with our mini team of three on a gorgeous bridal shoot in Oregon. My sad 10 cent mask wasn’t making me feel super “wedding-y” and I figured I must not be the only one. So I hit Etsy , Insta & my favorite online shops to find more stylish & wedding-ready face masks that are both functional & fashionable.

Aside from general style & level of “fanciness” I’ve come up with some options that are healthier for your skin ( silk masks save you from skin irritation!) and even ones that match your bridesmaid dresses . Speaking of which, if you have direct contact with your dress designer (or even bridal salon), they may be able to make you a mask that matches your gown using the same fabric. Score!

But if that’s not the case, I’ve found some real winners shoppable online. Just a note, these are non-medical-grade masks, but they will offer some level of protection advised by the CDC (and required to be worn in public by many state & local governments).

From Microsoft to HPE, Gainsight, and more, leading tech brands are going virtual. Here are 10 well-executed virtual event ideas from tech companies and what you can learn from them.

1. Qualtrics

Qualtrics, an experience data company owned by SAP, has mainly focused its virtual event strategy on webinars. However, after having to postpone its huge X4 Summit — which Qualtrics bills as “the greatest gathering of experience management professionals on the planet” — the company decided to launch a digital event series called “WorkDifferent.”

The pandemic has completely transformed how companies do business , and Qualtrics celebrated how its customers have adapted to this change. “WorkDifferent,” which took place on Aug. 12, featured marquee speakers like best-selling author and acclaimed researcher Brené Brown, sports icon Tony Hawk and Omar Johnson, the former chief marketing officer of Beats by Dre, covering topics like “How Brands Can Find Their Way Without Losing Their Way” and “Keeping Your Wheels Spinning While the World is at a Standstill.” The event also featured digital case studies focused on organizations including Microsoft and the City of Orlando on how they’ve transitioned to remote work while improving both their employee and customer experience.

Key Takeaway: Qualtrics shows how companies can pivot their in-person events to online in a way that meets the moment. Brené Brown and other industry heavyweights were scheduled to speak at the X4 summit in March, but Qualtrics didn’t let that cache go to waste and figured out a way to reformat and reimagine the event virtually and deliver content that was both on-brand and timely.

2. Cisco

Last year, Cisco convened its partners and customers from across the country in San Diego for Cisco Live .

This year, none of them had to leave home. The company transformed Cisco Live into a two-day virtual event with over 500 sessions focused on topics that are top of mind for IT leaders and professionals, including network transformation, SD-WAN and mobile edge computing. With that many sessions, Cisco was smart to divide the event into four distinct channels: the innovation channel, possibilities channel, IT heroes channel and the IT leadership channel, which gave attendees a way to easily navigate this massive digital experience.

Key Takeaway: Cisco used the power of its own technology to create what was arguably one of the largest online events ever in 2020. And Cisco apparently did so successfully. The two-day event had three million live views, the sessions received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 and 84% of attendees either liked or loved the event, according to a promo video the company posted on Twitter .

3. Gainsight

Gainsight held a free two-day virtual event, “Pulse Everywhere,” that brought together customer success and product professionals. The May event featured over 25 sessions and a variety of event types across five tracks, with leaders from top companies such as Splunk, Adobe, VmWare and LinkedIn. Gainsight has made all the content available on-demand for free, allowing site visitors to watch video of each session and download the slides for future reference as long as they fill out a registration form to access Pulse Everywhere’s content.

Key Takeaway: Gainsight turned what traditionally would have been a 5,000-person live conference into an online experience for 22,000 attendees in the span of 45 days. In a blog post, the company said it was focused on creating a distinct virtual event, so it basically had to start from scratch with a “beginner’s mind” and focus on how to reimagine everything from the registration to the networking experience. Gainsight decided to go hybrid for some parts of its event, using a combination of pre-recorded sessions followed by live Q&As to bring a bit of the traditional in-person experience to attendees.

4. Microsoft Build

Microsoft took its annual developer conference virtual with a two-day event that featured nearly 600 sessions on topics ranging from how inclusivity can drive innovation to how remote teams can be productive. In a sign of the times, Microsoft even held “Community Connections” experiences where a yoga teacher guided attendees through different movements to promote relaxation and stress reduction.

Key Takeaway: Realizing that it has a highly engaged audience of developers, Microsoft knew it was important to continue connecting with this audience, which is why the company held its virtual event on the exact same dates the in-person conference was scheduled to take place in Seattle.

Microsoft typically uses this conference to get the developer community excited about new product updates and to break news about the company’s latest and greatest innovations. More than 200,000 people registered for the event and major media outlets covered it, proving that conferences don’t always have to be in-person to generate the same amount of buzz.

In the future, you may even be so successful in the virtual space that you’ll want to continue using these hybrid event ideas !

5. 2020 HMG Live! New York CIO Summit of America
